More genocide

Israel is now committing a second genocide. 

Funny thing, when you turn a blind eye to human rights abuses because you think the folks it's happening to are expendable, the abuser doesn't stop; they move on to a new victim. 

Israel is seeking to permanently depopulate a large swath of southern Lebanon, ordering the evacuation of all Lebanese south of the Litani River. On Sunday Defence Minister Israel Katz said the IOF will “accelerate the destruction of Lebanese homes in the line of contact villages, to thwart threats to Israeli communities, in accordance with the model of Beit Hanoun and Rafah,” which are cities in Gaza that were largely flattened.

Since the start of the month Israel has killed over a thousand Lebanese and destroyed large swaths of Beirut. Before Hezbollah launched a half dozen rockets in response to the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, Israel violated the fifteen month ‘ceasefire’ 10,000 times, killing 300 Lebanese, according to the UN mission in Lebanon.

As they seek to ethnically cleanse southern Lebanon, Israeli officials and commentators are openly calling to settle Jewish colonists there. Some see the war on Iran as an opportunity to extend Israel’s northern border to Lebanon's Litani River. A member of the Israeli government Zvi Sukkot declared, “We must conquer territory in southern Lebanon, destroy the villages there and annex the territory to the state of Israel.”

As part of an effort to further subordinate Lebanon to US and Israeli dictates, the Canadian Training and Assistance Team-Lebanon has bolstered the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) as a counterweight to Hezbollah. LAF receives about half its budget from the US and has received tens of millions of dollars in Canadian support

It didn't stop with Gaza when you failed to intervene. It isn't stopping in the West Bank when you say nothing at all. It won't stop in Lebanon. 

Ottawa must denounce the genocide in Lebanon. Canada should also stop intervening politically and military in Lebanon to undercut legitimate resistance to the “Greater Israel” project. Hezbollah should be removed from Canada’s terror list. From Lebanon to Gaza, the West Bank to Iran, it is Israel that is terrorizing the region.

Money

The high incidence of money talk here is surprising to me, given the scarcity of either hard cash or savings accounts. Not that no one has money here, but living a basically subsistence existence off a jungle farm with only one major crash crop a year means you never have a whole lot of cash -- either on paper or in hand. We're currently entering the season of money here in Bekondo, when the cocoa crop is mostly harvested, dried and sold to buyers. Christmas is party time, not because of Christ but because of cash. It's a lively time for parties, running a generator to power lights and music, trucking in drinks to flow with goodwill. It's the time when schools put their foot down and demand tuition fees be paid or students leave. It's a time of increased crime because people are travelling to visit family and money is around. Deep breaths, just relax

I am immensely relieved to have my visa application in the mail...except I won't be free of trepidation until I have my passport back, visa approved. Sending my visa makes me realize it's actually going to happen -- sooner rather than later. Just one more day of work at the newspaper, 2 1/2 more shifts at the bookstore. Training the new guy today went well for me; I hope it went well for him as well! Thankfully, I have news that I will not be wandering around Douala by myself upon my arrival in Cameroon. (Okay, not that that was going to be the case, but it sounds more dramatic.) The original plan was that I'd meet Dan and Lisa at Charles de Gaulle and continue with them from there in on. Just the way I like it -- being "adventurous" within the safe parameters of responsible and experienced oversight.
