As its name suggestions, World Beyond War, like me, doesn’t think war effectively solves any problems and would best not exist. But one must at least engage with the premises, so here, I’ve added some of my own spice to their letter urging Canada to at least not cooperate with the military of a country we’re at war with, even if it’s “only” a trade war.
Dear Mark Carney
You seem to think Canadians are stupid. It's embarrassing how correct you are, but not all of us are asleep. You warned us you'd try to undermine our best interests and even use the law against us, but all most people heard was your obviously false promises on election night to "fight for us."
Or did we only hear a proposition where there was none? Because it seems you are in fact fighting alongside our greatest threats.
At your press conference on Saturday to announce the suspension of trade talks with the US and the imposition of countervailing tariffs, you were asked: “Why does it feel like, today, Mark Carney is going to war, trade war?” You replied, “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.”
In these circumstances you must at a minimum begin to pause some officer exchanges, military overflights and training missions with the US. It’s also time to pause some of the military accords Canada has with a US military led by an annexationist president.
Last year former defence ministers Peter McKay and David Pratt wrote, “It is estimated that since the 1940s, the two countries have signed more than 2,500 agreements covering North American security, defence, research, communications, logistics and maritime operations.” A decade ago, the Department of National Defence suggested there were 500 active accords, noting there are “eighty treaty-level agreements, more than 250 memoranda of understanding, and 145 bilateral forums on defence” between the two countries’ militaries.
All this cooperation with a country fully supporting genocide and undermining the International Criminal Court.
Through NORAD, other bilateral military accords and soldier exchanges hundreds of Canadian troops are directly assisting US military operations around the world every single day. Canadian Colonel Alain Lafrenière was recently Deputy Mission Commander of US Navy exercise Pacific Partnership 2026 and Canadian Colonel David K. Turenne oversaw core air operations at the massive US military base in Qatar during last summer’s US/Israeli attacks on Iran.
Polling demonstrates that Canadians want to get tough on the US. According to a poll released by The Maple in April, 55 percent say it should be illegal to join the American military.
It’s time to pause officer exchanges, military overflights, training missions and military accords with a US military led by an annexationist, genocide-supporting president.
We are for life in Canada, not for blood drenching money and destruction.
