To Mr Carney & the finance minister
I am deeply concerned about Prime Minister Carney's upcoming "generational budget", which has been described as an austerity budget that will require "sacrifices."
Let's take a moment to ask who are we NOT asking to sacrifice: those who can best afford it and who bear the greatest responsibility for bringing climate change around our ears.
Enough!
We can't sacrifice our planet. The real route to a resilient economy isn’t more fossil fuel infrastructure and climate regulation rollbacks — it’s investing in people and clean energy. It looks like a 100% renewable East–West power grid, and fair taxes from mega-corporations.
I believe that investments in the public good are what make Canada strong — which is why I’m convinced that in the face of Trump’s tariffs, we must prioritize spending in the 2025 budget that puts people and the planet first.
Specifically, I call on you to ensure that the following are prioritized in your 2025 budget:
- Funding to build a minimum of 4 million units of non-market, affordable housing (social, co-op, or public housing) for households and families on low-moderate incomes by 2034.
- Funding for a 100% renewable East-West energy grid that can create good, reliable jobs and increase our energy resilience and independence from the United States.
- An end to subsidies and tax breaks for corporations that don’t act in the public interest.
We can stand up to Trump by investing in public solutions that serve the public interest — not by handing our power away to corporations that aren’t accountable to us. This is your chance to do something historic — and your voters are looking to you to deliver.
