Oddly, CEO banker Mark Carney was actually aware of the dangers of fossil fuels and was tentatively in favour of the green energy transition and industry paying damage fees on their extraction. But as CEO of Canada (he is NOT acting like a Prime Minister but as a business leader), he's forgotten all of it and is full speed ahead on raking in corporate profits while Canadians suffer in every way.

Dear Prime Minister Carney,
The science is clear. Burning fossil fuels is cooking our planet. You said yourself that the “vast majority of reserves are unburnable” over a decade ago.
It's not just words on a page: we are seeing this with our own eyes, experiencing it with our own bodies.
Since you opined that we oughtn't be burning the reserves, it has nevertheless continued, and the dire predictions about the climate crisis have proved not only true, but have been realized earlier than expected. Destructive fires, deadly heat waves, and devastating floods are regularly impacting communities across the country and around the world, costing billions of dollars and endangering millions of lives.
Your oil profits just aren't worth it when compared to the costs of repairing or mitigating the damage.
Your recent MOU with Alberta is the exact opposite of what this moment calls for and is the opposite of what most Canadians thought they were voting for. It paves the way for more dirty extraction and toxic pipelines, expanding dangerous tanker traffic, and more carbon in blatant, egregiously cynical "profits-for-me-disaster-for-thee" move) prioritizes corporate profit above the health of our communities, the future of our planet, and the rights of Indigenous peoples.
On top of all of this, your government is gutting key federal climate legislation, rendering our emission reduction targets unattainable and putting a livable future further out of reach.
This is unacceptable.
That’s why we’re calling on you to:
- Immediately freeze new oil, coal, and gas extraction in Canada and launch a plan to completely phase out the fossil fuel industry. That means *no new pipelines*.
- Transition Canada to a 100% renewable energy economy. That includes funding a publicly owned East West Grid to power communities with affordable, reliable, renewable energy while uplifting Indigenous leadership and creating tens of thousands of good, green jobs.
The decisions you make this year will fundamentally shape the future of the country and the planet.
Canada cannot afford to continue down a trajectory of fossil-fuelled climate chaos. We will not let you put the needs of Big Oil above those of our communities.
With urgency,
